Paracetamol is another painkiller, which is used as an alternative. It is not as effective as NSAIDS but may also help in reducing the side effects, which are caused by NSAIDS. Codeine is a strong painkiller that is at times combined with or without paracetamol. It can also be used alone. Its side effect is constipation. Over the counter medicines are also recommended like ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve). If these medicines don't help then the doctor would advice the patient to go for stronger painkillers. Birth control pills also reduce the pain and discomfort. They prevent the monthly build up of tissues thereby making her periods more light and comfortable. These are taken when the women does not want to conceive. And when she does want to conceive then she can stop the intake of these pills. Progestins are alternative to birth control pills and are taken by those patients who can't have an intake of estrogen that is present in birth control pills. Like birth control pills whenever a woman wants to get pregnant she can stop taking these pills.
Gonadotropin releasing hormone agonists or GnRH agonists is used to reduce endometriosis. There reduce the amount of estrogen in a woman's body, thereby stopping the monthly periods. Leuprolide (Lupron®) is a GnRH agonist often used in the treatment. GnRH agonists should not be used more than six months because it can lead to osteoporosis. Whenever the women wants to get pregnant than she can stop the usage of the medicine. Danazol is a pain reliever, but it causes side effects such has weight gain, oily skin, hot flashes, tiredness and smaller breasts. This is also the number of times or the frequency of periods. It does not prevent pregnancy. |
